This is your GCMS COVID-19 update for the time period of February 4th through February 10th.
GCMS Schools experienced 11 positive students and two positive staff members during this time period. The Elementary School had 4 students and two staff, the Middle School had 3 students, and the high school had 4 students. We also experienced an additional 71 students placed in quarantine. All parties directly affected are notified at the date of occurrence.
We consider each positive exposure very carefully to ensure we are adhering to proper protocols as prescribed by Ford County Public Health, the Illinois Department of Public Health, and the Center for Disease Control. One point I want to clarify is that when we have a positive case we are required to do contact tracing 48 hours prior to the onset of symptoms for close contacts. This means that we are having children come to school with no symptoms, as they should, and exposing others not knowing they are carriers. This is important because we have had experiences where assumptions are made that people are not being responsible and putting others at risk. I can assure you most cases are unknown exposures. Please be kind and limit judgment because each circumstance is unique. To be transparent, we have had some who ignore the self certification expectations assuming symptoms are not covid related, and send children with symptoms. When we discover those we address it to minimize risks. I strongly encourage everyone to treat any symptoms with caution to avoid negatively impacting others.
We look forward to having a vast majority of our students back on February 16th or 18th and implore all students to stay engaged while absent to ensure a smooth transition back to school.
We are all fatigued by the challenges of this school year,! Stay the course, find the positive, and support our children!

We have made an update to our snow day schedule at the middle school. This schedule should be followed if school is called due to inclement weather conditions moving forward.
The schedule has been shared with all of the students via email and will be shared each time there is a cancellation due to weather conditions.
A schedule has also been shared with our Life Skills students and their parents as well.

As you see indoor events unfolding on camera both home and away please understand that every situation is different in every gym, with every agreement, with every team. Number of players, size of the bleachers, who is essential, opponents determinations. Please be understanding and supportive of kids, coaches, and officials. Remember when we were all saying we just want the kids to get to play. We all have the opportunity to make this a positive experience despite the restrictions and challenges. We are playing, the glass is half full!
I started this with I don’t get to go either because that is reality, I am not essential and I am watching on technology like most of us. Sometimes the tech will be great other times it won’t, but the kids are still playing.
Go Falcons! I am proud of every kid that is doing the best they can today!
