GCMS Community,
I wanted to take a moment and share our process and expectations for the allowance of Middle School Softball and Baseball for the 2020 Fall Season. The purpose of this letter is to let you know GCMS’s plan for these seasons given the circumstances handed down to us from IESA, ISBE, IDPH, and the State of Illinois.
GCMS will offer competitive softball and baseball teams for all 6th – 8th graders that wish to try out. Each of these teams will keep approximately 18 players, which is the same as past years.
The seasons for these two sports have been lengthened, but will end with a regional versus having a full State series. Athletic Director Mark Berry is working hard to form a 10-14 game schedule to allow the student athletes to compete. The IESA only allows for two contest days per week during this season.
Participation on these teams will come with enforcement of IESA, ISBE, IDPH, and State of Illinois health guidelines and recommendations being followed by all athletes, coaches, and fans while on school property. This includes social distancing of 6’ or more when possible, wearing of masks when it is not possible, and minimizing contact with people outside of your immediate family.
Attendance at HOME games is allowed but will be restricted to the outfield fence area at both facilities. Coaches and players will be using the base-line fences and bleachers to adhere to the mandates in order to play. We strongly encourage families to NOT travel to away games to minimize crowds at these contests and assist in facilities management in order to have and complete the season. Sadly, if the crowds grow too large or rules are not complied with we will have to consider the viability of competitions.
Also, please be aware that there will be no concession stands, but restroom facilities will be open.
We are very excited to be able to provide these opportunities to the kids and encourage all students, families, and fans to make this possible by following the mandates that we are required to follow, and the expectations that GCMS has laid out.
Thank you for your cooperation and support!
Sincerely,
Jeremy Darnell
GCMS Superintendent
